Having worked as long as I have in the internal auditing field, I often feel that there is a dearth of understanding about internal auditing among certain circles. Some accounting educators, CPAs, executives, members of boards and councils often do not seem to understand internal auditing.

The current Institute of Internal Auditors definition is: “Internal auditing is an independent, objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve an organization’s operations. It helps an organization accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach.”
