VIA hosting community presentation: “Growing cooler-Urban development and climate change”
VIA Metropolitan Transit and the American Institute of Architects San Antonio will host a community presentation to demonstrate how changes in land use and development patterns can help reduce carbon emissions.
The presentation – titled “Growing Cooler – Urban Development and Climate Change” – is open to the public, and it will be held Thursday, March 27th @ 6 p.m. in the VIA Metro Center, 1021 San Pedro Avenue. The presenter will be Reid Ewing, Ph.D., Research Professor at the National Center for Smart Growth.
The presentation will show how changes to urban land improvement can help reduce emissions and benefit the environment. Such changes can encourage the development of neighborhoods with homes that are conveniently located to desired destinations to promote walking, bicycle riding, and transit use. Cutting back on the use of private vehicles is an easy way for a household to reduce overall emissions. Each vehicle taken off the road can lead to a 30 percent reduction in a household’s carbon footprint.
In addition to his position at the National Center for Smart Growth, Dr. Ewing is also associate editor of the Journal of the American Planning Association, columnist for Planning magazine, and Fellow of the Urban Land Institute. On Friday, March 28, Reid is also presenting a Transportation Choices Forum sponsored by AIA San Antonio and Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Adkisson. For more information, please call 362-2166.
