Houston — Doctors at the Houston hospital where Grammy-winning Tejano singer Emilio Navaira is being treated say he may not survive a severe brain injury he suffered when his tour bus crashed Sunday.

Emilio underwent two hours of surgery on Sunday and is in a medically-induced coma as physicians at Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center in Houston try to control the swelling of his brain. On Monday, his doctor said he is still on cautious ground. "There is a chance he may not make it -- everyone needs to understand that up front," Dr. Alex Valadka said.

He said they are measuring the pressure and oxygen levels in his brain. Navaira is in a medically induced coma, the surgeon said, adding that people with this type of injury typically have a survival rate of 65 to 75 percent if all goes well. The San Antonio native was driving the bus home following a performance at Hullabaloo’s nightclub on Houston’s southeast side.

The bus crashed into traffic barrels where Loop 610 and Highway 59 meet on the southwest side of Houston. He was the most seriously hurt of seven people aboard the bus. One of those is still hospitalized. There is a prayer vigil scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight at Parking Lot A at the Alamodome.(Associated Press and KHOU television contributed to this report)

Our thoughts and prayers are with Emilio Navaira and his family.

  1. Our prayers are with Emilio and his family. Why does some news say that everyone else have been release from the hospital and then they say someone else is still in the hospital. Who is that person? Who else is still in the hospital and what's his (her) name and condition?
