Kiwi Mana, New Zealand Spirit @ Bihl Haus Arts

January 11-February 16th
Opening Reception: Friday, Jan. 11th, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Drawing Workshop: Saturday, Jan. 12th, noon-4 p.m.

Bihl Haus Arts is pleased to present the exhibition “Kiwi Mana (New Zealand Spirit), which opens with a reception on Fri., Jan. 11th, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. New Zealander Lea-Anne Sheather captures the essence of New Zealand women in the landscape in her brilliantly colored paintings.

They eloquently pair with the documentary photographs of New Zealand scenes by San Antonio photographer Kathy Armstrong who lived there in 2005-06. Armstrong’s photographs use patterns to isolate icons of common life in New Zealand, while Sheather’s paintings of women in contemporary adornments link them with their spiritual environments.

In addition, Sheather leads a workshop in “Experimental Abstract Drawing,” scheduled for Sat., Jan. 12th, noon to 4 p.m. at Bihl Haus Arts. Participants will explore the local environment and learn to look at it in a new way. Experimentation with different ways of recording their observations will provide participants with the inspiration and an approach to enable them to develop abstract compositions.

These compositions could be seen as finished products in themselves or may form the basis for further paintings or collages. This class is suitable for beginners or those with some experience. The class is limited to 15. For reservations, 210.383.9723, or

This exhibition is the first in a series of exhibits and events about New Zealand coordinated by the Southwest School of Art & Craft, titled Te Tataitanga / Bind Together, and co-organized by Kathy Armstrong.
