Malcolm and Soechting - Two Former Chairs of the Texas Democratic Party endorse Noriega's Bid for US Senate
( Austin , TX ) — Two former Chairs of the Texas Democratic Party — Molly Beth Malcolm and Charles Soechting — both of whom played critical roles in the rebuilding of the Party’s infrastructure, have endorsed the exploratory candidacy of State Rep. Rick Noriega for the United States Senate.
“Rick serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Texas National Guard, so Texans respect the courage he shows in speaking out against a misguided war in Iraq . Texans trust Rick because he speaks from experience,” explained Malcolm, who served as state Party Chair from 1998-2003, and currently serves on the Texarkana College Board of Trustees. In contrast to Republican stereotypes of Democrats, Malcolm added, Noriega is a “leader who can uniquely communicate what Democrats stand for from a position of strength and moral responsibility.”
"Things have changed in ways few of us could have imagined just four short years ago,” noted Soechting, referring to rising Democratic prospects in Texas and falling approval ratings for both Bush and Cornyn. Soechting, an attorney who served as state Party Chair from 2003-2006, noted that the Democratic primary has attracted two strong candidates, but made clear that “this race is about more than financial support.” In endorsing Noriega, Soechting stated, “we need to send a leader to Washington who has first-hand experience with not just the process, but with problems this country is facing right now. Rick is that leader.”
The endorsements of the two former state Party Chairs follows a growing list of support the Noriega candidacy has received, including endorsements of the State Association of Fire Fighters, former Governor Dolph Briscoe, former Lt. Governor Bill Hobby, a host of his colleagues from the legislature and considerable support among the Texas netroots community.
“Molly Beth and Charles provided needed leadership to our Party in some of our most difficult times,” Noriega said. “It is a great honor to have their support, because they know what it takes to win statewide in Texas .”
