Census Bureau to ensure Hispanics represented

Congressman Charlie Gonzalez would like to take this opportunity to let you know about a very important field hearing being held in San Antonio on Monday, July 9, 2007 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Room 103-A at 9 a.m.

The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform's Subcommittee on Information Policy, Census and National Archives will be holding this hearing to examine the U.S. Census Bureau's plans and ongoing efforts to work with various entities, including state and local governments, community organizations, and other interested parties to ensure that Hispanics and other racial, ethnic and language minorities will be counted accurately in the 2010 Census.

Among the issues that will be discussed are the importance of community partnerships in ensuring an accurate count, the importance of culturally appropriate outreach, the challenges associated with reaching and counting members of racial, ethnic, and language minority groups, as well as members of rural communities, the implications of the current immigration debate for response rates to the 2010 Census and the Census Bureau's efforts to create a diverse workforce.

We all know how important an accurate Census count is to our community, not only for statistics' sake, but for how we apportion Congressional districts as well as fund different programs throughout the country. It is important for all of us to work together to ensure that everyone gets counted.
