Bob Martin, President Homeowner-Taxpayer Association of Bexar County

We pay the highest taxes in Texas . As a result, government authorities provide many taxpayer funded programs. For the rich, there are tax abatements. For the poor, there is rent, food and utility assistance.

Homeowners on the tax end of “tax and spend” were promised significant property tax relief this year. However, the tax cut we were counting on was effectively eliminated by the ten percent average increase in appraisals.

Do not be fooled by the inflated estimated tax reduction reported on appraisal notices. This is an illusion. Instead, compare the actual amount of tax you paid in 2006 with total estimated 2007 taxes. This comparison will expose the true impact of appraisal increases.

Furthermore, there will be no cut in school tax rates next year. As a result, we anticipate a substantial increase in property taxes as appraisals and bond debt continues to skyrocket. The American dream of home ownership is fading fast for many San Antonio citizens.
