New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson visiting the Alamo City, Monday, March 19th at the Plaza Club

Dear Fellow San Antonian,

I have a friend who has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize four times for his efforts in negotiating the release of hostages, American servicemen and political prisoners in North Korea, Iraq, and Cuba.

Most recently the Save Darfur Coalition (SDC) approached him to travel to Sudan to meet with President Omar al Bashir where he was instrumental in negotiating a 60-day cease-fire.My friend has served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, U.S. Secretary of Energy, a member of Congress for fifteen years, Chairman of the Democratic National Convention in 2004, and is currently the Governor of New Mexico.Needless to say, Governor Bill Richardson has made his mark.

Many of you know that Governor Bill Richardson has formed a presidential exploratory committee. This truly is a meaningful time for so many of us who have pressed for and supported Hispanic leadership. Clearly Governor Richardson has proven his leadership. No matter your party affiliation I am asking you to join me in welcoming and supporting Bill on his visit to San Antonio. The Governor is visiting on Monday, March 19, 2007.

In my estimation the 2008 presidential election is very fluid. At this moment in the race, Governor Richardson deserves our support – and appreciation – for his public service. I have decided to be true to my agenda. Bill Richardson has my support.

Please join me and many others in this effort as we move the Hispanic empowerment agenda forward. I hope to see you at the Plaza Club on Monday, March 19th, 6 p.m. For further information please contact Alice Guerra at 732-8111 or by email at

Very truly yours,

Henry Cisneros

  1. Question: Why is it that nobody seems to be pointing out the problems with Bill Richardson and national security. There is still significant questions on what happened with the release of nuclear secrets to China when he was Secretary of Energy and apparently leaked important information to the press. The press is going down fighting to protect their source, but Richardson has never satisfactorily addressed the issue and he was ultimately in charge. It appears to many in the know that he may have personally been the source.
Also, in looking at the education problems in his own state, we see graduation rates in the tank and no hope of improvement. This is especially true for Hispanics in his state.
We see Richardson driving funding for a very nice train in New Mexico that conveniently will have its launch just prior to the national presidential election. Unfortunately, the train does little except provide the appearance of concern for public transportation.
Lastly, he is pushing a special session for his legislature to tie up loose ends on his gay rights agenda. Unfortunately for him, the legislature doesn't want to deal with it because it is viewed purely as political fodder again for his presidential bid instead of what is right for his State.
Lastly, has anyone asked him why he bought a billboard on Times Square a couple of years ago to promote New Mexico? It would have been a good idea except 3/4 of the board was a picture of him and the rest was about New Mexico in small barely readable type. Sounds like a guy thinking about pushing himself and not the interests of his State. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but just because a guy can travel the world, get stuff done by giving everything away and then claim he is a bastion of negotiating prowess still concerns me.
