SAAHJ hosts 10th Annual Scholarship & Awards Gala @ Westin

The San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists held their 10th annual Awards Gala @ the Westin Hotel, Thursday, July 31st honoring AT&T Executive Patrica Diaz Dennis with a community award while honoring KTSA Newswoman Elizabeth Ruiz for Lifetime Achievement.

Walker Report Publisher & former Balcones Heights Councilman Steve Walker (JP2, Pl. 1 candidate) will be a part of the 550 KTSA "Gang of Four" with Talk Show Host Jack Riccardi from 9-10:30 a.m. Friday, August 1st.

As a regular on the "Gang of Four," this will be the seventh appearance by Walker since last October. The Gang discusses local current events as well as national political news.

In the past, Walker has appeared with such guests as KENS-5 Sportscaster Joe Reinegel, ESPN Sportscaster Paul "Coach A" Alexander, local attorneys Rey De Los Santos & Jimmy Parks, OLLU Vice President Jim Eskine, former Express-News Reporter Laura Jesse, SA Current Publisher/Editor Elaine Wolff, Steven Stoli from the Steven Stoli Playhouse & Justice Steve Hilbig & more.

San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists honor their own

The San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists (SAAHJ) will host their 10th Annual Scholarship and Awards Gala at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 31st at the Westin Riverwalk San Antonio, 420. W. Market St.For nearly a decade, SAAHJ has awarded scholarships to Bexar County residents majoring in journalism or communication.

Approximately $100,000 in scholarships has been distributed by the organization to promising students who want to further their education. "This is a wonderful opportunity for aspiring students with hopes and dreams of becoming a journalist or working in the communications field," said Elaine Rodriguez, SAAHJ president.

"It's also an opportunity for SAAHJ members in the radio, television and print media to pass along their appreciation and help develop future journalists." In addition to the scholarship distribution, SAAHJ will also present Elizabeth Ruiz with KTSA-AM Radio with the Henry Guerra Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Journalism and Patricia Diaz-Dennis of AT&T, Inc. with the Community Service Award.

Established in 1986, SAAHJ is comprised of local journalists, public relations professionals and students interested in communications or the public relations industry. The silent auction begins at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner and awards presentations at 7 p.m.

Northwest Democrats to open campaign office for November

NW Democrats will be moving into our office this week, but we will need some help if you are available. We will first be meeting tomorrow at 10 am at our storage facility on Bandera (Public Storage, 7106 Bandera Rd), near the Bandera & Huebner intersection.

We will be moving furniture and supplies from storage to the our office at 96 Crossroads Blvd. We have a small pickup truck available if someone can drive it. Joyce’s email is not working, but you can call her at 387-3931; she has said that you can contact her up to midnight tonight to let her know if you can help out tomorrow.
