John Courage says support Ciro Rodriguez

Ciro Rodriguez & John Courage (photo)

Our Friend Ciro Rodriguez Needs You

I want to thank you again for your generous support of my campaign for the 21st Congressional District of Texas and to ask you to make another commitment of
support for my friend Democrat Ciro D. Rodriguez, currently in a runoff against Republican Henry Bonilla in the 23rd Congressional District race in South Texas.

The great nationwide Democratic Party victories in the House and Senate, as well as the governorships and legislatures of a majority of states, have given us all something to celebrate, but I want you to realize that the 2006 Congressional races are not over.

Here in Texas we still have one more Republican to retire and one more great Democrat to send back to Congress. The same August re-re-redistricting that changed my CD-21 to favor the incumbent actually put Republican Congressman Henry Bonilla of CD-23 in a more precarious position.

Now Ciro Rodriguez, who ably and honorably served four terms in Congress before losing his seat in the wake of DeLay's redistricting scheme, is now on the verge of beating Bonilla in a Dec. 12 runoff and returning to Congress to truly represent the people of South Texas! But he needs our help.

I strongly urge you to contribute to Ciro’s campaign today. You can do so online through the Act Blue site we've set up. Or you can visit Ciro’s campaign website. (When you make a contribution please add 21 cents to your total, so we will have an idea of how successful our efforts to raise money for Ciro’s campaign have been.)

If you live in or near Northwest San Antonio, please stop by Ciro's campaign HQ at 4435 DeZavala Road and ask how you can help. Wherever you live, you can make a difference from your own home through Online Phonebanking.

I hope you will join me in sending an honest, hardworking, grassroots Democrat back to Congress. And once again, thanks for your friendship and support for my campaign. I still believe that at times like these, Congress needs Courage, and Ciro Rodriguez has the courage.

Surprises on the Way

New Projects on the Horizon

Over the past year we have worked to change Congress and Texas, and while the elections are over, the fight for reform is not. All of us at Team Courage are excited about sharing some news on how you can fight for ethics reform -- ending the culture of corruption and the influence of incumbency -- and help us educate and elect strong and fair-minded leaders.

Today, help elect Ciro Rodriguez, but stay tuned for more information after the December 12 runoff election.

BCDPNews goes independent of website, changes name to Walker Report, but keeps link

Steve Walker (photo)
Balcones Heights Councilman
Walker Report News Editor

BCDPNews, a mainstay on the Bexar County Democratic Party webpage is now officially independent of the website. The name has also been changed a second and final time so as not to confuse readers. The first change was too similar to the YahooGroup name. It is now called the Walker Report. The link is still the same, however. You can check out the link, www.bcdpnews.blogspot.com or go to www.CiroDRodriguez.com and click on the BCDPNews icon.

In an attempt to increase the Walker Report readership by reaching out to independents and Republicans to embrace and espouse our political views, it is believed that severing the tie to the official local Democratic Party website, would allow more freedom of expression and the opportunity to discuss in an agreeable manner, issues facing the Democratic Party.

Currently as an independent link on the local Party website, the Walker Report is severely hampered by limitations by what some consider appropriate material to post. With a large committee of party activists involved in the direction of the blog, it is becoming increasingly cumbersome to function effectively and efficiently with so many competing voices.

Now that Democrats constitute the majority in the halls of Congress and State Houses around the Country, it is a golden opportunity to spread the Democratic message to everyone.

The goal to promote Democratic values, Democratic candidates and the Democratic message is still intact. That will not change. This is and will always be a Democratic blog.

This is not about compromising our integrity, our values or our message of inclusion. Hopefully the Walker Report will evolve into the place where ideas take root and Democrats excel.

The journey begins....

Bexar County extends early voting for runoff

Express-News Staff Writers

Bexar County Commissioners on Tuesday added two days of early voting to the runoff in Congressional District 23, agreeing to calls for the move from Democrat Ciro Rodriguez's campaign and a civil rights group.

But Scott Haywood, spokesman for the Texas secretary of state's office, said the commissioners don't have that kind of power — casting doubt on whether people can vote beginning Saturday or will have to wait until Monday.

"They have no authority to move the early voting time frame," he said. Haywood didn't know whether the secretary of state's office had talked with Bexar County officials about Tuesday's vote, and he couldn't say what the next step would be.

After the unanimous vote, Commissioner Lyle Larson asked if any pre-approval from the secretary of state was required. Commissioner Paul Elizondo responded that while cutting early voting short would require such a move, extending early voting would not.

Bexar County Elections Administrator Jacque Callanen concurred with Elizondo's explanation and later expressed her support for the extension.

The commissioners' decision Tuesday would push the start of early voting in the contest between Rodriguez and Rep. Henry Bonilla, R-San Antonio, to Saturday.

Polling would run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
A week ago, Gov. Rick Perry set election day for Dec. 12, with early voting Dec. 4 through Dec. 8. But Rodriguez and the League of United Latin American Citizens objected to the announcement's timing, which came right before Thanksgiving. They argued that gave voters too little notice of the coming runoff.

Rodriguez and LULAC also noted that election day falls on Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe, a major religious holiday for Mexican Catholics, potentially driving down the turnout of Hispanic voters.

Rodriguez on Tuesday welcomed the extension, saying: "For working families, the weekend is crucial. ... Hopefully, there shouldn't be any excuse for not coming out to vote."

Bonilla spokesman Phil Ricks, who learned about the vote from a reporter, noted: "We would be very much in favor of that."

But at the secretary of state's office, Haywood said state election law rules out early voting on Saturday and Sunday. A provision for special runoff elections says early voting must start 10 days before election day — unless it lands on the weekend or a state holiday. In either case, early voting starts on the next business day.

The rule governs special runoffs for state Senate and House posts, but Haywood said it also applies to congressional runoffs.

Luis Vera Jr., LULAC's national general counsel, disagreed. He said that part of the election code shouldn't apply to the race in the 23rd District. Instead, he contends a provision setting early voting 17 days before election day — the same one used in the special election to replace Republican Tom DeLay in the 22nd Congressional District — should be the one state officials rely on.

"They used that (17-day) provision because they had a (Republican) write-in candidate, because they needed more time," said Vera, a Rodriguez supporter. "They change the rules to fit their needs."

LULAC and other groups, Vera said, are still deciding whether to go to federal court to seek a temporary restraining order to stop the Dec. 12 runoff.

Meanwhile, Callanen, the elections administrator, told commissioners that Gina CastaƱeda of Rodriguez's campaign brought the elections office a petition with 50-plus signatures to begin voting early.

Uresti, Martinez offer condolences to Madla family

Frank Madla (photo from La Prensa)

Carlos Uresti, State Senator says...

Tragedy saddens San Antonians, and Texans, with the news of former state senator Frank Madla's death.

Senator Madla proudly served the state honorably in his thirty-three years as state representative, state senator, and most importantly, as a statesman.

He is a man to be respected and his memory will last for years to come. My heart is heavy with sorrow and sadness. Yolanda and I send our condolences to both the Madla family and the Cruz family on their losses today. Our prayers are with all of them and for the recovery of Helen.

Frank Madla was an icon and will always be respected for his tireless efforts in fighting for the mentally challenged, and for bringing Texas A&M to the Southside.

In his memory, more than ever, we must continue to fight to ensure that a Southside Texas A&M becomes a reality.

Jaime Martinez, National LULAC Treasurer says...

In this world that we live sorrow comes to all...some sooner than others" Frank Madla was an unexpected kind of sorrow that came to us in a twinkling of an eye.

It makes us more sensitive of our way of live. Frank Madla will always be remembered in my heart as a brother who believed in justice and that was a way of life for him...that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere...He was a humble man to the end.

Tracy Bogert, SADL president says...

My family has been friends of Senator Madla since I was about 11 years old. I will always remember Frank as being a gentleman and a man of his word. Being a resident of the south side I can say with authority that Frank Madla always did what was best for the south side.

Frank was not the most eloquent speaker I had ever known but when he said he would do something you knew he would do it. Frank was a "behind the scenes" kind of guy who didn't seek the limelight.

My family and I will miss him. Our community has lost an icon. Our state has lost a leader who can never be replaced.

Hasta cuando nos veanos un dĆa.

Message from Ciro Rodriguez on the runoff

Ciro Rodriguez (photo)

Dear fellow Democrats,

On November 7th, voters across America joined together to voice their dissatisfaction with the failed Republican leadership in this country and trusted Democrats to lead us in a new direction both in the U.S House and Senate, but our work is not done. There is still one more seat that we must secure to ensure change in the halls of Congress.

On November 7th, the voters of Texas’ Congressional District 23, sent a very strong message of change when, despite Republican efforts to protect Henry Bonilla in an unconstitutional redistricting scheme, a majority of voters in CD-23 cast their ballot for new representation and a Congressman who will stand up for Texas.

The December 12th election date is rapidly approaching and your continued support is essential to securing CD 23 for the people of Texas. Those who ran spirited campaigns in the special election have already expressed their support and dedicated valuable resources.

I’m proud to have the endorsements of my fellow Democratic candidates who stepped up and ran this fall– Augie Beltran, Rick Bolanos, Adrian DeLeon, Lukin Gilliland and Albert Uresti.

As we have seen in the past, Washington Republicans will infiltrate our State and do anything to hold onto power and this seat. I greatly appreciate the outpouring of support I’ve received from Democrats all over Texas and I know I can’t win without your help.

One of the best ways that you can continue to fight is by making a contribution at www.cirodrodriguez.com. Your financial contribution will ensure that we have the resources necessary to reach out to all our voters.

We continue to need boots on the ground. As strong democrats and advocates for change, you are our best messengers. Please donate your time and we can work together to remove Henry Bonilla from office and replace him with a Congressman who will truly represent the constituents of CD-23, not the special interest groups.

Finally, I can’t thank the Texas Democratic Party and Chairman Boyd Richie enough for making the commitment to help me in the upcoming runoff election. Even before all the votes were tallied on Election Night, both the State Party and the DCCC were already discussing how we could work together to defeat Henry Bonilla.

Together, we can make the 23rd District part of a Democratic Congress that is working to get our country back on track. Together, we will join the fight to focus on the real issues facing American families: raising the minimum wage so that all Texas families can prosper, ensuring affordable and accessible health care, lowering prescription drug costs for our seniors, making higher education more affordable, protecting our national security, preserving our environment, and supporting our veterans and our troops.

With the support of the Texas Democratic Party, Democrats throughout Texas and my friends and supporters here in CD-23, I know we will be victorious in December.

Please encourage your family and friends to vote for change. Election day is December 12th, with early voting starting December 4th - and remember to visit my website at
www.cirodroriguez.com to make a contribution and to sign up to volunteer.

Sincerely,

Ciro D. Rodriguez

BCDPNews to pay tribute to Frank Madla

Frank Madla (photo by La Prensa)
Former State Senator District 19

It has been suggested by JoAnn Ramon, former campaign manager for former State Senator Frank Madla, that BCDPNews pay tribute to the Southside Icon whose untimely death and the death of his mother-in-law and only grand child during the Thanksgiving Holidays, caught us all by surprise.

Like many of you, I too knew Frank Madla from my days teaching on the Southside. I remember him to be a man of honor and integrity and one who was always there when we needed him. He will be sorely missed.

That having been said, we are asking that if you would like to be a part of the tribute, to send us your thoughts or reflections on your remembrances of Frank Madla; the neighbor, the politican and the family man.

Email your thoughts and memories to me at misterbalconesheights@yahoo.com.

Bonilla-a war profiteer? Documentation says "yes"

Larry Romo (photo)
Texas Demvets Chair

Researched by Larry Romo

Henry Bonilla + Alliant Techsystems Inc. Relationship

The Facts:
In early 2002, Bonilla bought through his spouse, tens of thousands of dollars in stock in defense contractor Alliant Techsystems Inc.

Later In 2002, the House Appropriations Committee designated and Congress voted authorizing $1.25 billion dollars for Alliant Techsytems, Inc. to provide Army munitions, $94 million more than the Department of Defense requested.

That same year, the Alliant Techsystems, Inc. Employees Political Action Committee (PAC) contributed $1,000 to Bonilla’s congressional campaign, in addition to the $500 he received in 2001.

With his vote in 2002 as a congressman and as a member of the Appropriations Committee, Bonilla boosted the value of his own stock in Alliant Techsystems, Inc., a company that is receiving more defense appropriations as the war in Iraq continues, meaning higher stock values and more money for campaign contributions.

This conflict of interest is highly unethical for a public official. Bonilla used his position as a congressman to boost his family personal finances and his campaign.

Radnofsky says thanks for helping Ciro

Barbara Ann Radnofsky (photo)

This Thanksgiving we are appreciative of your help.

You helped Ciro Rodriguez in Congressional District 23. Please spread the word to your friends in this huge district from San Antonio to El Paso to vote December 12 (early voting begins December 4).

Thanks to the good folks on our list, we raised nearly ten thousand dollars for Ciro Rodriguez at a fundraiser held at my home. 71 friends also clicked through to donate online.

Ciro has an admirable voting record in the U.S. Congress as well as the state legislature, including education innovations benefiting Texans. His opponent has violated his Contract with America, including a promise of term limits and rubberstamping the failed policies of the do-nothing Congress.

His opponent, if re-elected, will join the ranks of the minority party. Ciro will join the majority, and have a positive effect for his district and for Texas.

Ciro challenges Bonilla to a debate in Spanish

Rodriguez challenges Bonilla to two debates including one in Spanish according to the Quorum Report.

Bonilla camp responds it already agreed to two and questions why Rodriguez concelled one that had already been set.

With only three weeks until the election, the question of debates between Republican incumbent Henry Bonilla and challenger Ciro Rodriguez ramped up today.

According to the Bonilla spokesman Phil Ricks, two debates had already been agreed to with one set for December 1, hosted by the South San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.

However, according to Ricks, Rodriguez canceled the December 1 debate siting scheduling conflicts.

Meanwhile, the Rodriguez Campaign sent a
letter to Bonilla yesterday requesting two debates, one in English and one in Spanish. Rodriguez said, " As someone familiar with San Antonio's Southside and the diverse population of Texas' Congressional District 23, you can appreciate the relevance and tribute to our heritage of making a Spanish language debate a part of our two-debate agreement."

Ciro addresses Dec. 12th election date

Ciro Rodriguez & his brother Commissioner Chico Rodriguez (photo)

Statement by Ciro D. Rodriguez on December 12th Election Date.

"The Republican Governor Rick Perry and the Republican Secretary of State Roger Williams did a disservice to the voters of 23rd Congressional District today by setting the run-off election for December 12th.

This is yet another coordinated Republican scheme to manipulate the electoral process in order to limit voter participation.

This will not deter nor distract me. I will continue to highlight Henry Bonilla's record of failures on issues that matter to the voters of this District. Voters should know that Henry Bonilla failed to support our troops when he voted against a $1,500 bonus to those currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan .

Voters should also know that Henry Bonilla failed to support our veterans when he voted to slash billions from their healthcare, and that when it came to providing affordable prescription drug coverage to our nation's seniors, Henry Bonilla sided with the drug companies who have given him over $260,000 in campaign contributions.

The people of Congressional District 23 are ready for a new direction and I am asking for their support on Tuesday, December 12th."

Ciro makes a statement on his opponent

Ciro Rodriguez (photo)

Henry Bonilla: A record of failing America's Veteran's and the deciding vote against a pay bonus for our troops

San Antonio - Citing Henry Bonilla's long record of failing America 's Veterans, Congressional Candidate Ciro D. Rodriguez today joined members of the Texas Democratic Veterans to highlight the Republican Congressman's voting history and the importance of the upcoming run-off election.

"What Henry Bonilla says and what he does are two different things. This is an insult to our veterans and to the men and women serving today," said congressional candidate Ciro D. Rodriguez. "Bonilla's voting record on veterans' issues is clear - and simply stated, keeping our promises to our veterans is not a priority for the current Congressman."

Henry Bonilla has been a strong supporter of President Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's "stay the course" policy in Iraq , but when it came to supporting our troops, Bonilla was the deciding vote against granting a $1,500 bonus to every American service member serving in Iraq and Afghanistan .

"Henry Bonilla has voted himself thousands of dollars in pay raises, but voted NO to a much needed and deserved $1,500 bonus for the men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. That is more than a bad vote, it's a disgrace," said Larry Romo, Lt. Col., USAFR (Ret.) and Chairman of Texas Democratic Veterans. "That is why we are encouraging all Veterans living in the 23rd to support Ciro Rodriguez - a real champion for Veterans."

The Census Bureau reports that over 60,000 civilian veterans currently reside in Texas ' 23rd Congressional District. They didn't matter to Henry Bonilla when he voted to slash billions in funding for veterans' benefits, including cuts to disability benefit payments and reductions in money for GI bill benefits and health care. Bonilla has also voted to block the expansion of the military's TRICARE health insurance program to thousands of reservist and National Guard members.

During his tenure in Congress, Ciro Rodriguez was a leader in advocating for the needs of America 's veterans. He served with distinction as a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the House Veterans Affairs Committee -- where he was the Ranking Member on the Veterans Health Subcommittee and served on the Benefits Subcommittee.

Commissioner Tommy Adkisson asked Northwest Democrats at the November 18th monthly meeting to, "be good stewards and take down political signs."

According to Adkisson, all candidates and their supporters need to remove the signs since the election is over and some voters now consider them clutter. He pointed out that most of the signs are reusable for candidates future campaigns.

A letter from Michael Moore to Conservatives

A Liberal's Pledge
to Disheartened Conservatives

To My Conservative Brothers and Sisters:
I know you are dismayed and disheartened at the results of last week's election. You're worried that the country is heading toward a very bad place you don't want it to go. Your 12-year Republican Revolution has ended with so much yet to do, so many promises left unfulfilled.

You are in a funk, and I understand.

Well, cheer up, my friends! Do not despair. I have good news for you. I, and the millions of others who are now in charge with our Democratic Congress, have a pledge we would like to make to you, a list of promises that we offer you because we value you as our fellow Americans. You deserve to know what we plan to do with our newfound power -- and, to be specific, what we will do to you and for you.

Thus, here is our Liberal's Pledge to Disheartened Conservatives: I, and my fellow signatories, hereby make these promises to you:

1. We will always respect you for your conservative beliefs. We will never, ever, call you "unpatriotic" simply because you disagree with us. In fact, we encourage you to dissent and disagree with us.

2. We will let you marry whomever you want, even when some of us consider your behavior to be "different" or "immoral." Who you marry is none of our business. Love and be in love -- it's a wonderful gift.

3. We will not spend your grandchildren' s money on our personal whims or to enrich our friends. It's your checkbook, too, and we will balance it for you.

4. When we soon bring our sons and daughters home from Iraq, we will bring your sons and daughters home, too. They deserve to live. We promise never to send your kids off to war based on either a mistake or a lie.

5. When we make America the last Western democracy to have universal health coverage, and all Americans are able to get help when they fall ill, we promise that you, too, will be able to see a doctor, regardless of your ability to pay. And when stem cell research delivers treatments and cures for diseases that affect you and your loved ones, we'll make sure those advances are available to you and your family, too.

6. Even though you have opposed environmental regulation, when we clean up our air and water, we, the Democratic majority, will let you, too, breathe the cleaner air and drink the purer water.

7. Should a mass murderer ever kill 3,000 people on our soil, we will devote every single resource to tracking him down and bringing him to justice. Immediately. We will protect you.

8. We will never stick our nose in your bedroom or your womb. What you do there as consenting adults is your business. We will continue to count your age from the moment you were born, not the moment you were conceived.

9. We will not take away your hunting guns. If you need an automatic weapon or a handgun to kill a bird or a deer, then you really aren't much of a hunter and you should, perhaps, pick up another sport. We will make our streets and schools as free as we can from these weapons and we will protect your children just as we would protect ours.

10. When we raise the minimum wage, we will pay you -- and your employees -- that new wage, too. When women are finally paid what men make, we will pay conservative women that wage, too.

11. We will respect your religious beliefs, even when you don't put those beliefs into practice. In fact, we will actively seek to promote your most radical religious beliefs ("Blessed are the poor," "Blessed are the peacemakers, " "Love your enemies," "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God," and "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."). We will let people in other countries know that God doesn't just bless America, he blesses everyone. We will discourage religious intolerance and fanaticism -- starting with the fanaticism here at home, thus setting a good example for the rest of the world.

12. We will not tolerate politicians who are corrupt and who are bought and paid for by the rich. We will go after any elected leader who puts him or herself ahead of the people. And we promise you we will go after the corrupt politicians on our side FIRST. If we fail to do this, we need you to call us on it. Simply because we are in power does not give us the right to turn our heads the other way when our party goes astray. Please perform this important duty as the loyal opposition.

I promise all of the above to you because this is your country, too. You are every bit as American as we are. We are all in this together. We sink or swim as one. Thank you for your years of service to this country and for giving us the opportunity to see if we can make things a bit better for our 300 million fellow Americans -- and for the rest of the world.

Signed,
Michael Moore

A Heart Felt thank you....

And we know that all things work together for good
to those who love God,
to those who are called according to His purpose."
- Romans 8:28
Dear Friends,

After a long, arduous year of campaigning, I finally settled into some downtime after election day - time spent with family and friends; time spent in prayer, reflecting on the blessing of having won this election, preparing for responsibility that this new position requires, and preparing for the judicial leadership that I have promised you and will require of myself.

I wouldn't be here without the blessing of God and the people He sent to help in this campaign for children and families. I thank Him first and foremost.

I must thank my wife, Rachel, for being my best friend and life partner, for being dedicated to this campaign and for showing that commitment by taking on a vital and active leadership role. There was no task to menial, too complicated, or too delicate that Rachel didn't tackle and deliver on every count.

Thank you Mama Rose. You were my best poll worker. Thank you to my Sister Kathy who ran our phone banks, and emerged as a TV star in Sakai Sisterhood ads. Thank you to my brothers Randy and Paul. Special thanks to my son, George, and my daughter, Elizabeth. Great job family!

Special thanks to our development team, Treasurer Mary Alice Cisneros, Nelson and Tracy Wolff, Erin and Brent Barry, Elisa Chan, Sen. John Montford, and Carla and Andrew Morrison, Gordon Hartman, Edna and David Guerra and many others who stood with me all year.

I need to thank by branding team, the strategic and creative geniuses At GTO Advertising. My political consultant, Alice Guerra, was, without a doubt, the leader and strategist of this campaign.

Her intuition and vision generated winning concepts such as Do Not Be Confused, the Sakai Sisterhood, the Republicans for Sakai, and Proven vs. Potential, which were innovative and strategic in reaching out to voters and inspiring them to join us. Her judgment, insight, and counsel were critical to all the decisions Rachel and I had to make. Thank you so much Alice.

Carlos Pena, my Campaign Coordinator and copy writer, not only helped craft the messages but drew on every skill and talent he had to serve in the tough role of a traffic cop and project manager. He is going to make an outstanding community leader, just you watch.

Graphic Designer, Michael Garcia, is the one whose God given artistic ability designed the concepts Alice created in the wonderful ads and invitations that many of you saw and received. I am going to have to frame some of those - not only as momentos but, because they were so memorable.

I would be remiss not recognize the webmaster of PeterSakaiforJudge.com, Michelle Reynolds also of GTO Advertising. The web site drew accolades from near and far and was an integral part of our campaign. This was our branding and creative team and I thank them and recommend them highly.

I want to thank Ramon and Associates. Jo Ann and her team absolutely delivered the vote on E day. In true coordinated campaign form Jo Ann teamed up with the Sakai team and delivered effective "Get Out the Vote" and Rides to the Polls efforts with Henry Cisneros, Mary Alice Cisneros and Jaime Martinez recording messages to get out the vote. Thanks for all the hardwork and saavy of reaching the grass roots of the Democratic base.

I also want to thank Gabriel and Abraham Salazar of Opinion Strategies for overseeing the phone banks, field operations, and operating the Robo calls and polling. Opinion Strategies provided numbers crunching information that helped Alice and I make important strategic decisions to reach our goals.

I must thank the men and women who stepped out from of their comfort and safety zone to publicly support me, the Republicans for Sakai. Colonel Gene Townsend, Ann Kuykendall, and Dan Corbett all made the message clear that the race for the 225th District Court was not about party affiliations but about qualifications.

Having their voices on radio was both powerful and effective. I must also thank Buckner Fanning for making his first ever public statement endorsing a candidate for public office. The honor of having a leader like him take that step on my behalf is indeed overwhelming. His radio ad and Robo call were truly an added blessing.

I have to thank the Sakai Sisterhood for its support and energy. Women like Mary Alice Cisneros, Tracy Wolff, Pat Jasso, Elisa Chan, Arabia Vargas, my sister Kathy Sakai, Ginger Purdy, Pat Smothers, Councilwomen Patti Radle and Delicia Herrera, and so many others came together in a show of support for this campaign and beyond.

Keep your eyes open, the Sisterhood will continue and will an active force on behalf of children and families.

Thank you to the Democratic leadership of Carla Vela and her party operations to include BCDPNews Editor Steve Walker, Joyce Dorrycott and the North West Democrats, The North East Democrats, Tejano Democrats, Stonewall Democrats, and all Democrat organizations in Bexar County. There are not enough words to thank you for your hard work and role in this outstanding victory.

I also have to thank my team of office volunteers, poll workers, and the best phone bank in town. There are too many to name in such a short space. There was my sign team in Arnulfo Ybarra and Angel Martinez. Thank you Lupe Torres, Evelyn Mortola, Roselinda Martinez, Grace DeBraska, Maria Lopez, Kim Schmittou, and others who were available almost at the drop of a hat.

You enriched us with your presence, you kept us organized, and you kept our other volunteers supplied, moving, and motivated. Indeed, you were good as gold to us. An especially heartfelt thank-you goes out to you.

To all who voted, I thank you for your belief in my ability, your trust in my vision, and your faith in my leadership. Thank you for choosing me. I will not let you down.

Stay with me. This is only the beginning.
Peter Sakai, Judge Elect
225th District Court

Gloria Saldana says thanks to her supporters

Judge-Elect Gloria Saldana

To each of you who voted for me and gave me your support in this campaign, I offer you my heartfelt thanks.

I am aware of your many efforts undertaken to help me in achieving this victory, such as spreading the word personally, through the internet, in correspondence, through your financial contributions, the displaying of my campaign signs, and your votes.

I find it difficult to put into the words the gratitude I feel for your friendship, loyalty, and investment of time and energy. For those of you who included this undertaking in your prayers, I am especially grateful. Many feel (like me) that while my late mother, Amparo Ramirez, is not here physically, she played a large role in the success of this campaign.

She was my best friend and my biggest fan. In many ways, she blazed the trail, and I know that much of the loyalty I have enjoyed has been the direct result of her civic involvement, her example, and the friendships she cultivated.

The future is very exciting, and I sincerely acknowledge and thank you for all you have done to help me. I will continue to work hard and try to be the judge that deserves your confidence.

Mon Nov. 13th

Dear Chris Bell,

Thank you for standing up to fight. In a year when almost no one gave Democrats a chance, you announced your candidacy for Governor of the state of Texas. Critics said you were wasting your time, and many "elders" of the Democratic Party refused to ever begin to help you, choosing instead to wring their hands from the sidelines.

You didn't care. You knew there were problems too great to leave unchallenged and issues too serious to ignore. So you did what you've always done: you stood up and fought. For over a year, you waged a war on Democratic apathy and cyncism -- an opponent greater and stronger than any political counterpart you faced throughout the election.

The inclusion of independent candidates Carole Strayhorn and Richard Friedman sent Democratic dollars to Strayhorn, and Democratic youth support to Friedman.

For months, you were "that Democrat" running, and few ever gave you any kind of a chance. Did it shake you? No. You still stood up and fought for what you believed in.

You remained strong, talking about issues to every Texan you could, fighting an uphill battle no one believed you could ever win. And yet, you won countless battles along the way -- battles some may still not realize you won.

You stood up and fought, and won a battle on issue after issue. On education, your presence in the Governor's Race forced everyone to re-examine the high stakes nature of standardized testing.

On health care, you moved the debate about children's health care from legislative committee rooms to Texans' living rooms, and single-handedly brought the increasingly important stem cell issue to this year's election.

The work you and others did concerning our state parks will lead to a tremendous increase in Texas Parks and Wildlife funding next session, and your outspoken passion for ethics reform guaranteed no politician could dodge the question of corrupt campaigning.

On these and dozens of other important issues, you made a difference. Then came October. You proved to the papers and the public what you'd proved to us long before: issues, intelligence, and ideas matter.

You flew past Strayhorn and Friedman, and established yourself as the clear opposition to Governor Perry and his failed policies. You were a leader for the Texas Democratic Party -- one who made all of us very proud.

Though you came up short of the ultimate victory on Election Day, the battles you won will be seen in the upcoming legislative session. Your presence at the top of our ticket helped in numerous down-ballot races, and in a year when Democrats won back five state House seats and all of Dallas County, that presence cannot be minimized or ignored. It can and must only be celebrated.

Thank you for standing up to fight.

Thank you for believing in and talking about the issues that matter to Texas families. Thank you for showing Democrats that no matter what the odds, no matter what the pundits tell you, you must always stand up and fight. It's the only way we can ever hope to change anything. It's the only way we can help move Texas forward.

Thank you, Chris Bell. May you and your family enjoy some much deserved rest, and we wish you the best in all that you do.

Sincerely, The Writers of the Burnt Orange Report

Villarreal tackes fairness in taxation & other issues

State Rep. Mike Villarreal (photo)

State Rep. MIke Villarreal continued his work to support working families and responsive government when he filed the first of several proposals for the 80th Legislative Session today.(Monday-Nov.13th)

The veteran legislator submitted the Sales Information Act (HB 133), the Clean Elections Act (HB 111) and two bills to improve early education (HB 134 & HB 135).

The Sales Information Act would end a practice that allows the wealthiest property owners to dodge accurate tax appraisals while forcing middle and low–income residential property owners to pay full price.

“By not having sales information, in 2005 alone, we gave the wealthiest property owners over $5 billion of taxpayers' money - money that could have gone to improving our children's education, or investing in transportation to get us out of traffic,” Villarreal said.

Villarreal said many residential homeowners pay taxes based on nearly 100 percent of their property's value, while commercial and high-end homeowners pay below 50 percent in many cases.

The Clean Elections Act (HB 111) establishes a maximum, aggregate contribution limit of $100,000 by an individual for all state races, PACs and political parties who support state races. Texans for Public Justice is expected to release an analysis of big dollar donors' impact on the recent elections later this week.

Improvements to early education remain a cornerstone of Villarreal's work. The Representative kicked off his efforts to bring high-quality, affordable child care for working Texas families by filing HB 134 and 135.

HB 134 improves standards for those seeking early childhood education certification.

HB 135 add pre-kindergarten classes to the state’s standards for class size in kindergarten, first, second, third and fourth-grade classes.

David Van Os says thanks to supporters

David Van Os (photo)

Dear Friends and Supporters:

Language is not sufficient to fully express my deep gratitude for all that you have done in building and sustaining our campaign to put a people's lawyer in the Texas Attorney General's office.

You have been there with me over and over for the past year and a half; spreading the campaign's message through email, word of mouth, and literature; contributing hard-earned dollars to meet financial needs; coordinating and attending whistlestops in your counties; organizing support groups in your communities; furnishing your input about tactics and strategies; and providing the gracious words of encouragement that keep a candidate going.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Though the vote count went against us, a campaign based on heart, principle, conviction, and fighting spirit is never a failure. In every county in Texas, someone new heard and agreed with the message that we the people do have the right and the power to fight back for democratic control of our governments and our lives. In every county in Texas, someone new heard the message and voted for it who would not have otherwise done so.

Make no mistake about this. The power elites heard the message loud and clear and responded to the threat you and I represented. Their response was to sink unprecedented amounts of money into a campaign for Texas Attorney General in order to defend an incumbent who is operating the office of, by, and for their money and their power.

I am very proud of the thousands of individual grassroots contributions that came from you and others like you. You kept an administrative office open, you kept us supplied with the basic necessities of printed literature; you furnished stationary, postage, and office supplies; you kept the whistlestop tour going; you supplied travel expenses for a full year and a half of campaigning; and you purchased radio and newspaper advertising in the last week of the campaign. And even more so, you supplied the ongoing moral support that sustained my conviction that it was a fight worth fighting.

At the same time, I must candidly inform you that the level of Texas Democratic Party support for my statewide ticket-mates and myself left much to be desired. In a November 8 article in the Dallas Morning News a spokesman for the state party even publicly acknowledged that the party did not assist its statewide candidates. This matter must be addressed and I believe that it will be.

Shifting focus to a wider view, I am personally ecstatic over the Democratic Party's recapture of majorities in the U.S. House and Senate after 12 long years of arrogant one-party bullying. The American people finally awoke, just in the nick of time to restore checks and balances and stop the Bushites' headlong rush toward executive dictatorship in our country. This is a historic milestone of the highest importance.

Here in Texas the cause of people's government did make gains in some parts of the state, for which I am thankful. Nevertheless the executive branch of our state government remains in the greedy hands of corporate and political power elites that use Texas government in the cause of self-interest instead of public interest.

So yes, though the deep freeze is thawing outside of our great state, Texas citizens will continue frozen out of their own government at the highest levels. All of us together have only one option. Fight ‘em on the ice!

My warmest appreciation and regards,
David Van Os

Thank You!

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Thank you for all of your support throughout the past year. Without you, we would have never come so far. With your help, I reached voters and educated Bexar County about Probate Court like never before.

Thank you to those who contributed money and to those who contributed time.

We may have lost this one battle but there is a war yet to be one and I have not given up. I’ll be back and when that time comes, I hope you’ll be there by my side.

Also, we could use your assistance with collecting our campaign signs. We ask those of you who helped to put signs up to please help us take them back down. You can either drop them off at my office or we can pick them up from you.

If you see a sign that is still standing, please contact us with the location and we will take it down as soon as possible.

Warmest Regards,

Young Democrats to celebrate Nov. 16th

San Antonio Young Democrats Chair

San Antonio Young Democrats Victory Party

Where: Stone Werks at the Quarry Market
When: Thursday, November 16 at 6:30 p.m.

Come and join your fellow Young Democrats and some of our newly-elected Democratic office holders for a night of celebration!

Democrats took the U.S. House, the U.S. Senate, and hold a majority of Governorships. We won 5 seats in the Texas House. There were many local victories as well. In fact there are too many to list.

Special thanks to all you YD’s that helped out during this election cycle:

Monica Lopez, Alicia Scobey, Lawrence Rangel, Dennis Bente, Brenda Wilson, Lydia, J.R. and Savian, Christina Buenrostro, Juan R. Gonzalez and soon-to-be Mrs. Gonzalez, Ricardo Corona, Violeta Garza, Ernest and Cassandra Pena, Nicole Pena, Elisha Rigsby, Kathy Castro, and Sergio. I’m sure I missed some names but if you helped at any SAYD event, thank you.

Juan Garcia Event

Also, special thanks to Eddie “Mynor” Rodriguez for bringing in newly-minted elected State Representative Juan Garcia to San Antonio . This may well be the first time SAYD served as a host for a candidate and we are glad he won.

Juan Garcia sends his thanks to SAYD and TYD (Texas Young Democrats), who block-walked for him before the quarterly executive committee meeting. It was hot and humid that day in Corpus Christi , but it was worth it.

Thank you to all the volunteers, the block-walkers, the phone bankers, and to the young campaign managers, field directors, and interns at the different campaigns.

Special congratulations to Young Democrats Roger Garza and Clifton Walker. Their great candidate Joe Farias (a roughly $300,000 campaign) beat Republican George Antuna’s $800,000 negative, James Leininger-funded TV ad campaign.

Thank you, Jade Chang for stepping up to being our Treasurer, and Michael Wright, our former treasurer, for making our blog intellectually-stimulating.

I also want to thank Marisela Baez and the Our Lady of the Lake Democrats for their support. Thank you UTSA and Trinity College Democrats for maintaining strong chapters. We are working on getting chapters stated at St. Mary’s University, the University of the Incarnate Word, the Alamo Community Colleges , and high schools throughout San Antonio .

Now we have former Congressman Ciro Rodriguez battling the infamous Henry Bonilla in a run-off. Once that election is done, we will regroup, reorganize and gear up for City Council elections.

Thank you note from Judge Monica Guerrero

Judge Monica Guerrero
County Court #7

I would like to send a giant thank you to all the people who took the time to cast their vote, to drop a line and that volunteered on my campaign.

I am so happy that the voters in Bexar County are confident in my abilities and made the right choice to ensure that victims of domestic violence are adequately protected.

The bottom line is that I will work hard to ensure the safety of families and children as I have the past four years. I am extremely grateful to all the unsung heroes in the Democratic clubs who spent countless hours sending out literature and making phone calls on my behalf.

My win would not be possible without everyone's collaborative effort.

I look forward to serving the citizens of Bexar County for four more years and I thank you for your trust in me.

Sincerely,

Monica Guerrero

Message from Judge-Elect Larry Noll, of the 408th

Larry Noll & wife, Patsy and Noll & Judge Barbara Hanson Nellermoe at Diaz Y Seis

It's Victory thanks to you!

Your efforts and talents, hard work, dedication, e-mails, prayers, generous contributions, phone calls, referrals, letters of support and encouragement all combined into an awesome grass roots political campaign. Beyond a doubt, this was a county wide effort that spanned generations of friends.

To our oldest friends – you are the BEST! The most tenacious. You have stood with me through a lifetime of adventures - Patsy and I love you. To our newer (and sometimes younger) friends – Patsy and I are heartened by your embracing friendship and bolstered by your generosity and spirit.

I am inspired by the trust you have all placed in me, and I look forward to serving you on the 408th District Court.

Congratulations to the other newly elected and re-elected officials - together we will all continue to make a difference for our community.

Sincerely,
Larry Noll, Judge-elect
408th District Court

Hank Gilbert thanks the voters of Texas

Hank Gilbert (Photo)

Dear Friend,

I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for your hard work and support throughout my campaign for Texas Agriculture Commissioner. None of the milestones we accomplished would have been possible without your help.

When all of the dust settled we had achieved a great deal, although we came out on the short end. We carried 46 counties in the state, many of which haven't been carried by a Democrat in years. We were also very close in about 25 other counties.

We garnered the highest vote of any statewide executive race on the ballot Tuesday. That is something I am definitely proud of, and you should be too - you made it happen! We intend to build on that, and work at making the Democratic Party the party of dominance in Texas by 2008!

Every state in the nation, with the exception of Texas, decided on Tuesday night that the current leadership's message of “stay the course” is the wrong course. After 4 more grueling years of this leadership in Texas, I'm positive we will abandon that message also.

No time is better than the present and within my family, as well as my extended family, we have already begun working toward that goal. I look forward to meeting and working with each of you over the next 2 years to ensure our Presidential candidate wins the State of Texas!

Our next goal will be to win every Democratic position on the ballot in 2010! Once again, my family and I thank you for everything. We will continue to keep in touch, and together, we will make a difference!

Your Friend,
Hank Gilbert

Editor Steve Walker says, "the blog ain't dead yet"

BCDPNews Editor & Balcones Heights Councilman Steve Walker
Others featured in photos include: Chris Bell, Ciro Rodriguez, Rosie Gonzalez

Now that the election cycle is almost over with the exception of the December run off election of Ciro Rodriguez still standing tall against his Republican challenger, postings on the blog will slow down, but not stop.

This posting is #381 and counting. Looking back at the election, as Democrats we can be proud of our candidates who took on the awesome task of challenging established Republican incumbents and taking back four district judge benches, one County Court bench, keeping a State Rep. position and a State Senate seat in the Democratic column.

We suffered no incumbent losses, yet elected seven new Democratic faces to reckon with in years to come. Our task at hand is not over. We now must all focus on the Ciro Rodrigez race to make it complete.

Although all our candidates did not win every race, we take heart in knowing that the caliber and quality of those candidates we did field for the campaign was stellar. Remember it took two political campaigns for Judge-Elect Larry Noll to become a judge.

It also took our now re-elected Judge Barbara Hanson Nellermoe two times as well to get to the bench. They didn't give up after one try and thank God they didn't. We have their experience and knowledge to set the example for what a judge should be.

If all our candidates gave up after one try, we wouldn't have Commissioners Tommy Adkisson or Chico Rodriguez. I certainly wouldn't be a Balcones Heights Councilman. I have been voted off twice!! Next cycle I plan to be on the ballot for a JP slot.

We look forward to seeing some of our recently defeated candidates back on the ballot next time. There is no shame in losing an election. President Abe Lincoln made a political career out of it.

We thank the efforts of John Courage, Albert Uresti, Lukin Gilliland, Augie Beltran, Adrian De Leon, David Van Os, Eddie De La Garza, Richard Garcia, Lauro Bustamante, Dan Pozza, Ina Castillo, Barbie Scharf-Zeldes, Milton Fagin, Eddie Bravanec, Tim Ybarra and Larry Stallings for representing the Bexar County Democratic Party.

Having said that, let us unite one more time behind Ciro Rodriguez this cycle and make it a complete victory. Read the blog as more winners of this cycle are sending in their thank you notes to the voters of Bexar County.

Judge Canales credits God for his re-election

County Court Judge Paul Canales
Also in the photos is the Judge's wife, Rhonda

Dear Friends & supporters:

Thank you for your support in spite of the fact on the Sunday before election day, my opponent ran a full page ad vilifying me and demanding that the public fire me as judge. I thank you for standing by me.

Despite it all, the Good Lord smiled upon me and my family, he brought my friends, acquaintances, all the people who have touched my life or whose life I have touched out and encouraged them to vote.

God is good , He is Great and He has a plan. I don't claim to know what His plan for me is. but at least, on Tuesday, November 7, He gave me a small glimpse. I think He wants me to continue on as a judge for 4 more years and I intend to oblige him.

Thank you all for all your prayers and support

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support throughout my campaign. I asked the voters for their most sacred - their VOTE - and they responded! Thank you!

I want to thank the party, as well as, Steve for his blogging, the precinct chairs working hard out there, along side so many pollworkers (friends, family and new friends) and my fellow running mates, who were wonderful! What a great experience it has been to run with such quality people!

I also want to remind everyone, that just because this election is over, the next one is just around the corner and we must work hard to build upon our organization and encourage greater participation. Lets take the holidays to recoup and start up again in January to keep working towards a stronger party and presence!

Thank you one and all!

Sincerely,

Texas DemVets endorse Ciro Rodriguez in run off

Former Congressman Ciro Rodriguez

By Larry Romo
Texas Demvets Chair

The Texas Democratic Veterans whole-heartedly endorse Ciro Rodriguez for election in the Texas 23rd Congressional District runoff on December 19th. Ciro Rodriguez has truly been an advocate for Texas Veterans as he has served on the House Armed Services Subcommittee with honor.

He has always been pro-active by having numerous bi-partisan Veteran's Town Hall Meetings during his congressional tenure listening to our concerns and working with us to find solutions to our issues enhancing the quality of life for veterans and their family members.

He has visited numerous Veteran Service Organizations and is a champion of our causes. Ciro has fought for more dollars to fully fund the Veterans Administration especially when it comes for our medical care.

Henry Bonilla on the other hand in 2002 before voting to go to war in Iraq, bought tens of thousands of dollars in a defense contractor stock, Alliant Techsystems.

He reported the stock buy in his wife’s name and also in 2002 and other years he received campaign contributions from this company’s Political Action Committee. The same year, he voted a 1.25 billion-dollar contract for Alliant Techsystems.

He is making money on his stock buy and vote for his family by using his political office. No congressman should try to make money off a war, this looks very unethical.

Ciro Rodriguez will do what is right for the military, veterans and their family members. Please vote for Ciro Rodriguez in the December 19th runoff.

Judge Nellermoe says "Thank You," to voters

Judge Barbara Hanson Nellermoe

To all members of our Democratic Family, and to all of our larger Family of Bexar County voters, I thank you with all my heart for the trust and confidence you have place in me to continue as Judge of the 45th District Court.

Thank you, Carla and your team, and the several coordinated campaign committees, clubs, and PACs who worked so hard to stay focused on the mission. Steve's blog is a fantastic tool!

I also want to give a big abraso to the many poll workers who passed out literature, to the volunteers to dressed their yards and polling sites, to the many, many talented and caring people all over the city who helped all the candidates get their messages out to the voters.

Thank you all!
Judge Barbara Hanson Nellermoe

I have now had a day to think about the long, wild ride that was the race for governor. It will take much longer to sort through all that occurred but I do know this: I am thankful for the experience and blessed to have had so many wonderful people such as you supporting my effort.

In my concession speech, I shared the Alexandra Saperstein quote that appears on a gift from my nieces: "Those who never risk themselves, never fully become themselves."

As this experience has taught me, there is so much truth in that statement. Losing is no fun but simply giving up and not fighting is absolutely nothing. As the race for governor wore on, I found my footing, I found my voice and felt as if I had a chance to "fully become myself."

I leave the race with head held high and pride intact - having accomplished more than many thought imaginable.

I am encouraged about the direction of both our state and country. The results in the Texas House elections will hopefully produce a more bipartisan approach to governing and a chance for real progress here in the Lone Star State.

The majority shift in both the U.S. House and U.S. Senate is nothing short of phenomenal and my only hope now is that with the leadership of both chambers secured, my Party will not forget our past mistakes that took us to minority status or the more recent mistakes made by Republicans that produced the same.

History can be a great teacher.

I am also heartened by exit polls showing that one of the driving forces behind Tuesday's results was people being fed up with corruption. If we are going to move forward, we are going to have to end the cash-and-carry nature of politics. Period. Ethics reform is key to a brighter future.

And speaking of the future, I hope mine is bright, too - I just don't know exactly what it will be. My focus will be on family and work and I will be pursuing a number of different options.

Please keep us in your prayers as we change course and know that if we can ever do anything for you, we're just a phone call away. Thank you for giving me the privilege of being the Democratic Nominee for Governor of Texas!

It was a tremendous honor for which I will always be extremely grateful.

Excerpts from Express-News article on Barbie

Barbie Scharf-Zeldes (photo)
Probate Court #2 candidate

Express-News, Sunday, Nov. 5th
Metro Section

By Elizabeth Allen
Express-News Staffer

Barbara Scharf-Zeldes is waging her campaign for judge of Bexar County Probate Court on a principle.....

Scharf-Zeldes, the Democratic challenger contends that (her opponent) leaves the courthouse early, rules from emotion rather than the law and plays favorites in his court. But the principle that spurred her to challenge (her opponent) was an experience in his court involving a guardianship dispute and a divorce.....

Scharf-Zeldes also complained to the Texas Ethics Commission that (her opponent) used campaign money for a $1,000 contribution to (a Republican) campaign for the County Court-at-Law No. 6 seat. The limit from political accounts is $100....

Scharf-Zeldes has handled family and probate matters for the San Antonio police and firefighters unions for 14 years. She bristles at (her opponent's) accusations that she only handles uncontested divorces...

"I've been in jury trials--it's been a long time," she said, adding, "probate court handles mainly hearings and bench trials with no jury," proceedings she said she has handled many times.

Scharf-Zeldes regularly begins her pitch with, "I'm running because of a little boy."

The story she tells is a 6-year-old boy neglected by an alcoholic mother in another state. The child's San Antonio grandfather applied for guardianship, and (her opponent) appointed Scharf-Zeldes as the child's lawyer....

A legal puzzle arose arose when the mother filed for divorce in the other state and Scharf-Zeldes argued that probate court law gave (her opponent's) court jurisdiction, (her opponent) declared he didn't want a family case in his court, that it belonged in a district court...

But the incident symbolized, "all problems that attorneys have been having with him since he took office in 2002."...

Scharf-Zeldes said she was hurt by the (Police) unions endorsement of (her opponent). "It seemed like my work hadn't been worth it."...

But she said she's been pleased by the supportive feedback she's received.

"This is the one court that touches everybody," she said.

Excerpt from the Chris Bell blog (recounting the Bell on Wheels tour)
San Antonio, TX - 9:15 pm Friday-Nov. 3rd

It was a carnival atmosphere in San Antonio Friday night.

Standing tall by his wife's side on a stage in front of every Democratic candidate and elected official in Bexar County, Chris Bell looked out over several hundred supporters assembled on the bank of Woodlawn Park Lake in the middle of town.

“We’re Democrats, folks. And when we come together on Tuesday, we’re gonna say ‘Adios Mofo’ to Rick Perry!” Definitely the best line of the night.

Most among the throngs—that’s the word, throngs—that gathered on this flawless November night to hear their next governor speak were dressed in full Bell regalia and eating on turkey legs and nachos.

“Rick Perry says that the TAKS test is a preamble to a successful career. Well my friends, Rick Perry himself never took the TAKS test…(delayed laughter)” Second best line.

Biggest rally of the tour, the best energy of any crowd, the most momentum this campaign has ever had, and we’re gonna carry it over the weekend into Election Day.

The icing on the cake tonight was Chris leading the crowd in a recitation of "The Eyes of Texas." That put it over the edge for this particular staffer. Greatest event ever.

Catherine Torres-Stahl says "thank you"

Dear Friends and Supporters,

This is my last opportunity before Election Day to thank you for believing in me and for believing in this campaign. I could not have made it this far without support from each of you. But our work is not yet done.

Please do everything you can to remind folks to get to the polls on Tuesday. By forwarding this message to all the people in your email lists we can make a strong final push to get our message out and get more individuals to the polls.
Thank you for your generosity, your kind words and your most sacred gift to me, your vote.

Your trust in me is not taken lightly. I have done everything in my power to bring victory to this campaign and, if elected, I pledge to bring dignity, respect and fairness back to the 144th District Court.God Bless,

Judge Catherine Torres-Stahl

Annalisa Peace asks for your support

Annalisa Peace
candidate for Edward's Aquifer

By Annalisa Peace

It sometimes happens that nature provides us with a system more perfectly suited to the needs of humans than those conceived in the minds of men. Our Edwards Aquifer is an example of such a system.

Our region is among the fastest growing regions in the nation. San Antonio is spreading out and growing by leaps and bounds. Unfortunately, much of this growth is occurring exactly where we don’t want it - over the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone.

We need to act now, as a community, to protect our water resources and our neighborhoods. This is why I am running to represent District 2 on the Edwards Aquifer Authority.

If elected, I will work hard to protect our water if you give me the opportunity to represent our District as a member of the Edwards Aquifer Authority.

350th post on BCDPNews, Saturday, Nov. 4th

Steve Walker (photo)
BCDPNews Editor &
Balcones Heights Councilman

We are nearly there fellow Democrats as Republicans split their tickets, or just come over all the way and support our slate of well-qualified candidates. We anticipate Independents jumping on the bandwagon as well.

With 350 postings under our belt, there appears no let up in sight as we approach this coming Tuesday. Hopefully that night we will claim victory across the County. Currently I am requesting that all candidates who are hosting parties or get togethers to watch the returns as they come in, send me locations and the times so we can post them for our Democrats who wish to stop by and share your victory.

It looks as if Bexar County set some sort of record by going to the polls and casting 122-thousand votes in the early election sites. We expect that to put us over.

Remember we have an excellent chance for victory and a chance to pick up some judicial benches, 2 State Senate seats, 2 State Rep. slots and hopefully two more Congressional seats. (21st & 23rd)

BCDPNews will be updating as quickly as possible. The event at Woodlawn Lake with Chris Bell was so successful that I had to post three separate articles on the BCDPNews to adequately do justice to the event. I took over 200 photos during the event.

Any last minute information that needs to be posted before election day, be sure to send it to me at misterbalconesheights@yahoo.com.

State Rep. District 118 Joe Farias calls the political attacks aired on TV by his Republican opponent on his campaign, outrageous.

According to Farias, his opponent is being funded by pro-voucher advocate and billionaire James Leininger with large sums of cash to produce false and misleading ads against him.

"What is worse than attacking me personally, which I can handle, these ads are saying that Southside teachers are not doing their job and education in Southside is failing our children. These ads are an insult to our part of town," Farias pointed out.

State Senate District 19 candidate Carlos Uresti who has served as the District 118 State Rep. for over 10 years says, "Antuna is showing his desperation in these attacks and the voters will see through it and election day."

You probably have heard much about candidates for governor, Congress and the Legislature.I would like to take just a moment and ask you to vote (or encourage those who can) for Judge Catherine Torres-Stahl for the 144th District Court. Here are a few reasons:She has experience.

In her service as a prosecutor and judge, Catherine has proven her commitment to protect our children and neighborhoods from drugs, gangs and violence. She is connected to our community.

She has served our community for more than 13 years as a prosecutor and municipal court judge. She is a well-respected jurist who takes her job seriously.
When San Antonio attorneys were asked how local judges measure up in categories such as “knowledge of the law” and “integrity” early this year, Catherine scored at the top of every category. For more information, go to Judge Catherine Stahl's website.

Ladies Call Court in Session!
2006 election shows women in key judicial races

San Antonio- What would Ann do? She would smile ear to ear knowing that Bexar County is stocked with women candidates vying for different judicial seats in San Antonio.

Touting slogans such as “Not your average Barbie” to hard hitting campaign spots that claim abuse of power in court; these women are ready to change the tide of a male dominated field. –But don’t think that they are qualified because of gender.

“The fact that I am a woman should not be on the mind of the voters. The issues are what are important, and I know that San Antonio voters can differentiate between the two,” states judicial candidate, Ina Castillo.

Castillo, who is running against an incumbent, is ready to take on old school politics and bring a new much needed change to County Court 5.

Scharf-Zeldes is quick to mention that her name may be misleading but she is ready for office. The fact that she is woman only increases her odds on Election Day.

Clearly all women on this November 7th ballot have strong voices and clear messages. We invite you to meet the candidates on Saturday, November 4th at 1 p.m. as they Get Out The Vote on the final weekend before the election on the Bexar County Courthouse steps. *

Interview opportunities available with the following candidates:

Barbie Scharf-Zeldes, Candidate for Probate Court #2
Ina Castillo, Candidate for County Court #5

Radnofsky speaks to American G.I. Forum

Barbara Ann Radnofsky (photo)
Senatorial candidate

Remarks delivered by Texas Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate to G.I. Forum/America's Last Patrol veterans' march in Brownsville.

Our government promised service personnel the medical and health care they earned. The current appropriation process and approach to veterans has broken that promise. Our veterans deserve an advocate in Washington.

We must recognize that the demands on the Veterans administration will only continue to grow, for new veterans and for those from prior conflicts who are aging. Thus, we must be prepared to provide the Veterans Administration with the resources it needs for these future and current demands.

We must honor the promises that we made to yesterday’s veterans as well as today’s. Those who have sacrificed for us should not be denied.
My opponent in this U.S. Senate race, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, has consistently voted against veterans, as documented on the issue chart at my website
www.radnofsky.com.

After 12 years of neglecting Texas veterans, my opponent responded to my call for a VA Hospital south of San Antonio, traveling to McAllen, and promising such a hospital in late 2005. She’s reneged on her own call for a veterans’ hospital in the Valley, offering instead an existing outpatient clinic in Harlingen, which Valley veterans characterized ad “breadcrumbs” and inadequate. Now, the idea has been buried by my opponent, with no progress made.

My opponent’s desertion of veterans means Texas ranks number two in the country for wounded, injured, or sick veterans denied VA care. The VA decided against the South Texas VA hospital without ever visiting South Texas, and won't change their mind without a new Texas senator.

Carleton Spears responds to opponent's attacks

Carleton Spears
150th District Court candidate

Since when is name-calling and character assassination a trait befitting a “lady” or a judge?

The recent television ads by my opponent indicate a lack of judicial temperament, which fits her reputation around the courthouse. The name-calling is typical of her attitude in court.

If she does not like what she hears, she takes personal offense and becomes angry with the litigants and their attorneys. Her yelling tirades have even caused her bailiff to quit working for her about a month ago and often leaves her staff in tears.

The truth is the truth no matter whether she likes it or not. It would be one thing for her to say that a statement is misleading. It is quite another to say that the speaker is a “liar”.

The pure and simple fact is that Littlejohn is one of the most reversed judges in Bexar County according to the Appellate Court records. She also has one of the lowest ratings of the Civil District Judges for 1) knowledge of the law; 2) judicial temperament; and 3) impartiality – the three key qualities a judge should possess.

The Express News has already recognized that her recent completion of a half a million-dollar home out of the county is a campaign issue. (A judge cannot live out of the county while sitting on the bench in Bexar County) Combined with the fact that she had told people in the courthouse that she was not going to run for re-election, and that her retirement vests on December 31, 2006, it is logical to assume that she will not stay on this bench for the entire four year term for which she seeks re-election.

It doesn’t make sense to leave a half a million-dollar home vacant for four years. It certainly looks like she would retire early to allow her party to appoint her successor giving him or her the advantage of incumbency upon re-election.

The childish personal attack made by Littlejohn is a key to understanding the type of court she is known for running.I can only hope the voters understand these facts and reject this type of behavior.
